Sustainable Living

We seek to live sustainably at Tararu Valley Sanctuary. Our goal is to have ecologically friendly buildings and use renewable energy as possible. We currently have solar panels and wind powered generators. We also follow principles of permaculture and grow our own organic food.

Description:
Tararu Valley Sanctuary is a centre of environmental education and action. The Sanctuary provides an interface for people to benefit Mother Nature while rediscovering their own true human nature. People are invited to explore human impacts on natural systems, the importance of these systems to us, and ways to actively live in harmony with Nature.

The Sanctuary restores the natural Mana of our ancient forest by maximising regrowth of biomass and optimal biodiversity, or richness. Massive trees echoing with birdsong, alive with lizards, bats and giant insects, will once again return to Tararu Valley.

The Sanctuary minimises its ecological footprint by creating eco-buildings, producing renewable energy, and the permacultural production of fruit, nuts, vegetables, productive animals, and timbers. Possible negative impacts of any foreign plants and animals on native ecosystems and/or landscapes will be careful considered. Our eco-buildings will be beautiful human habitats, being comfortable and functional in all seasons, and utilising sustainable technologies. We will actively seek alternatives to the currently widespread unsustainable practices and reliance on these external processes will be minimized.

By providing a balance of recreation, well-being activities, arts & music, along with structured work projects, The Sanctuary fosters both personal growth and opportunities where even short-term visitors can actively “be of service” to our Earth and each other.

We encourage healthful patterns of living, and spaces for meditation, yoga and healing are important. Education is often experiential, through hands-on application of ideas with active peer sharing. Sustainable living is fostered in the wider community through open-days, workshops, and offering the Sanctuary as a template model. Information resources are safe-guarded and shared.

Our community is based on trust, equality and peacefulness. Harmony is sought through remembering our essential unity, common values and the benefits of shared endeavour. Work relationships and external partnerships are fair and the Sanctuary seeks a solid financial foundation, with openness and social accountability, and full legal compliance.
